Mammography


What are the commnly used breast imaging technique?                                        (according to the patient’s age and complaint).

1.Mammography (with complementary ultrasound).

2.Breast ultrasound

3.Breast MRI

When to refer a patient for breast imaging ?

1-      Any female above 40 years old for annual screening without complaint.

2-      Any female below or above 40 years with complain such as:

·         Breast lump (painful or not)

·         Nipple discharge

·         Nipple retraction

·         Persistant breast pain (not related to the menstruation)

·         Abnormal increase in size

·         Skin changes

·         Inflammatory changes

·         Axillary lump

3-      Any female with family history/personal history of breast cancer.

4-      Female with familial cancer syndrome.

5-      Male with: breast swelling, breast or axillary lump.

 

Indications of mammography accompanied by ultrasound:

1-      Any female above 40 years with or without complaint.

2-      Any female between 30-40 years with breast lump, personal or family history of breast cancer.

3-      If the complaint requires mammography (as recommended by her clinician).

4-      Any male with breast complaint.

 

Indications of breast ultrasound:

1-      Young female up to 30 years old (as recommended by her clinician).

2-      Pregnant and lactating females.

3-      Young males (/boys).

 

The available intervention techniques:

1-      Ultrasound guided trucut biopsy.

2-      Ultrasound guided Fine Needle Aspiration and Cytology (FNAC).
